Your Odds of Getting Disability Benefits in the Mid-Atlantic Region

Across the United States over the years, it’s not unusual for more than three-quarters of initial applications for Social Security Disability benefits to get denied. Even after appealing the decision, often two-thirds of people still get denied.

When you appeal a denial, one of the crucial steps is going to a hearing with a Social Security Administration Administrative Law Judge (ALJ).

In an October 2020 snapshot of cases going before ALJs, government numbers showed people winning benefits after disability hearings about 44% of the time across the country.

So it’s less than half getting approved, a tough process. The success rate is about the same in some places, but even tougher in others.

Here’s how it looked in the Mid-Atlantic area:

    • Delaware: 41% were getting approved
    • Maryland: 44% were getting approved
    • Pennsylvania: 42% were getting approved
    • Virginia: 43% were getting approved.
    • Washington, DC: 43% were getting approved.
    • West Virginia: 42% were getting approved

You typically wait a long time to get to your hearing—10 months in Washington in 2020 to over 13 months in Maryland.

When you’re up against such a difficult process, it’s important to have an experienced disability representative like the ones at Mathis & Mathis.

Government numbers have shown that your chances of winning benefits nearly triple when you have a professional representative by your side in your hearing.

And you don’t pay a fee until you win benefits.

No matter where you live, if you’re wondering whether you qualify for benefits, you can get a FREE consultation from the disability advocates at Mathis & Mathis.
