Gain Financial Support to Help You Through a Health Crisis

Learning you have cancer puts everything on hold. All your attention goes to getting better.

It’s a tough road ahead. Your illness or side effects of treatment may put working and earning an income out of the question.

When you can’t stay on the job, Social Security provides disability benefits to help you lift some of the worry and manage your living expenses.

But like so much else in life right now, the process of getting the benefits is a roller coaster

Despite the hope they bring, benefits aren’t just handed out. You have to prove you qualify. That takes paperwork, diligence, gathering information and a great deal of effort. Most folks find their claims denied.

But Social Security formally recognizes many types of cancer. And this can ease the process when your medical diagnosis and records fit what people call the Social Security “blue book” list of impairments.

If your cancer is particularly aggressive, Social Security also has a way to speed up your claim.

How do you know what’s the best approach for your case? Mathis & Mathis Disability Advocates can help you.

We’ve helped thousands of people get the disability benefits they need.

If you’re fighting cancer in Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Alexandria and Northern Virginia, or anywhere in Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, Delaware or Pennsylvania, we’re here to fight for you to have a better financial footing and future.

Social Security Disability is All We Do.

When is Cancer Eligible for Social Security Disability Benefits?

When your illness has kept you out of work, and you expect you won’t be able to work for at least a year, Social Security has a list of cancers it deems eligible for disability benefits.

This includes cancers that impact, among other areas of your body, the:

    • Brain
    • Breasts
    • Lungs
    • Liver
    • Thyroid gland
    • Nervous system
    • Salivary glands
    • Small and large intestines
    • Gall bladder
    • Kidneys
    • Genitals
    • Skin

When a cancer is especially aggressive, you may qualify for what Social Security calls a “Compassionate Allowance.”

This program speeds up the application process—often relying on a diagnosis alone to award benefits, instead of making you provide reams of additional evidence in a months-long ordeal.

Some cancers that Compassionate Allowances cover include:

    • Acute and other forms of leukemia
    • Adrenal cancer
    • Adult non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
    • Bilateral retinoblastoma
    • Inoperable breast cancer
    • Certain neuroblastomas
    • Glioblastoma
    • Certain sarcomas
    • Medulloblastoma
    • Pancreatic cancer
    • Inoperable ovarian cancer
    • Mesothelioma
    • Thyroid cancer

Any form of cancer may be eligible for Social Security Disability benefits, but you must show that your particular symptoms are severe enough that you can’t work.

Telling your story so Social Security understands is what the D.C., Maryland and Virginia disability advocates at Mathis & Mathis do.

How to Prove You Should Get Disability Benefits for Cancer

Cancer comes in wildly different forms and can range widely in severity, making every case unique.

To show you meet the standard of an illness serious enough to prevent you from working for at least a year, you must carefully document your case.

In your benefits application, you’ll need to collect medical evidence that includes:

    • Your diagnosis
    • Stage of cancer
    • Lab test results
    • Surgeries and results
    • Medications
    • Details of your treatment and its effects
    • Your prognosis

When weighing your eligibility, Social Security will look at the type of cancer you have, how advanced it is, how often you’ve undergone treatment, how your cancer has responded to treatment, and any other factor that affects whether you can work.

Mathis & Mathis has been helping cancer patients throughout Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. for decades when they needed Social Security Disability benefits so they could focus on what’s important: getting better.
